How To Draw In Pen Up
In this tutorial, I will demonstrate how to draw tree branches. Drawing tree branches and twigs is similar in many ways to cartoon tree trunk as the strokes and techniques used are the same and it might exist helpful to go through that tutorial if you haven't done so already. I will utilize curt angular line stroke for cartoon branches but the aforementioned concepts apply to utilize of other strokes as well.
In this tutorial, I focus on texturing of tree branches and twigs. More than information on cartoon the outline of bare trees can be institute here. Cartoon tree foliage is covered in another tutorial.
Drawing and Texturing Tree Branches:
Written report tree shapes and branch construction whenever possible, especially when fully visible in wintertime. There is not bad diversity in shape, structure and size of dissimilar species of deciduous trees. I will explicate the general steps in detail here which can exist adopted to specific shape that you want to draw.
Cardinal Points to Consider:
- Clearly institute the lodge of main branches as shown below.
2. Texturing should be done along the direction of the branch. Darken more than the surface area of primary branch that is behind and hence would receive less low-cal.
In the following, shading of branch is done along its direction.
3. Bespeak the location of side branches accordingly. Darken slightly the point of attachment but don't brand the zipper area completely dark.
4. The order of minor branches when crossing each other should exist clear. You tin can even create a small 'discontinuity' in the dorsum branch at the point of intersection.
Following drawing shows the apply of above points. Study this to understand the points discussed above. Click to see it in particular.
Techniques for Finishing Bigger Branches:
Same techniques that were discussed for finishing trunks utilise for finishing branches as well. Primary thing to keep in mind is that texturing and crevices for a branch should always be added in the direction of a branch. Study the examples beneath.
Drawing a Thin Branch with 2 tones:
For a twig or thin branches, proper shading with 3 tones (night, eye tone and low-cal tone) can't exist washed due to sparse size. In this case, utilize only dark and light tones. Darken the tiptop and bottom (bottom slight more) and get out a streak of white in between to requite it volume. Make certain that all the edges are ragged as shown beneath. This is similar to how sparse trunks are textured with two tones.
When the size of branch is thick enough, use three tones (dark, heart and light tone). Every bit the size reduces and 3 tones can't exist washed, switch to two tones (dark and light) and finally use a single tone of solid dark as shown below. Make sure minor white is left in the heart as this is what gives the illusion of roundness.
Hither are some more than examples to written report. Dissimilar strokes that were used to texture trunk tin be used for branches equally well when size is sufficient. For smaller secondary branches, 2 tone technique is generally used. Observe how secondary branches overlap and intersect each other and primary co-operative. This gives more than depth to the cartoon. Strive for this in your attempts. Click to see details.
One side of the co-operative is darkened with more strokes to bring out perception of roundness. The lighter side is where the Sun is assumed to be shining.
Following close up shows additional points to keep in mind. Click on the image to come across details.
Branches Lying on the Ground:
A very fun simple limerick to do bare branches lying on the ground. In this instance add grass to define the ground on which branches are lying. Study the examples below. You lot can sentry video demonstration of drawing this composition on my YouTube aqueduct here.
Broken off co-operative covered with snow is another pleasing drawing that can be quickly and hands fatigued in limitless variations from imagination. Learn to draw the post-obit footstep by pace.
Cartoon a Immature Tree:
A immature tree with thin main dividing trunk is a dandy simple drawing to draw and savour. If the size of young tree is not too small, then primary trunk tin can be done with 3 tones and smaller branches with two tones. For a very small (or far away) young tree, main body is done with 2 tones and branches are tapered sold nighttime. Following are some examples.
Yous can picket video sit-in of cartoon a landscape with young trees hither and here on my YouTube channel.
Drawing a Tree Silhouette:
When a tree is sufficiently far away, but its silhouette is discernible. To draw this, utilize 2 tone technique for the main trunk and apply solid line for other branches as shown below. Think to taper the branches. Foliage can be hands added to give it a unlike feel as shown below. Adding leaf to a tree is fully discussed in 'Drawing tree' tutorial.
Post-obit is a 'Tree Co-operative Study' that shows drawing branches at unlike distances using techniques discussed to a higher place. Notation how ii tone technique is generally used for thin tree branches in middle distance. Practice this technique extensively.
Drawing a Bare Bush-league:
Thin branches and twigs of a blank bush are drawn using two tone technique. Post-obit approach can be used to draw information technology effectively.
More than information on calculation foliage to a bush and other attribute of drawing a bush is discussed in particular in drawing bush tutorial.
Cartoon Tall Twigs:
Bare tall twigs are great small sketches that can be quickly washed and can add interest to any scenery. They tin be fatigued using 2 tone technique as shown below. Find how 'discontinuity' is used at intersection points to clearly establish the order of twigs and hence add more depth to the drawing.
A bush in the back of tall twigs provides a nice backdrop. In this case, make sure to keep small-scale white betwixt the edges of twigs and bush leaf to make the twigs stand out in the front. In the absence of colour, this small white space is necessary to avoid unlike elements blending into each other.
Cartoon Landscapes with Bare Trees:
With techniques discussed in a higher place to depict bare wintertime copse and branches, pleasing landscapes incorporating them equally shown beneath tin be easily drawn. Click on it to learn to draw it step by step.
Bare trees and branches can be very effectively combined with darker tone of pine (coniferous copse) to create very effective landscapes as shown below. Acquire to draw pino trees here.
This should become y'all started. Try different co-operative shapes and use template beneath to practice. My workbooks comprise more content and hands on exercises to effort. You can find many more examples to do in Mini Landscapes.

Videos:
You can sentinel videos of techniques discussed above at my YouTube channel.
Following are some of my drawings where tree branches are prominent.
This completes the tutorial. I would beloved to hear from you any suggestions for new content or thoughts on improving the tutorials. Exercise often and accept fun. Likewise feel gratuitous to share it with in your social media using following links.
